1967 and its all happening; The Beatles release Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, Radio One launches, Hendrix sets fire to his guitar for the first time, Aretha wants RESPECT; Elvis marries Priscilla; The WHO play their first stateside gig and a certain Kurt Cobain is born. Wherever you looked the summer of love had something for everyone.
But when it came to fashion all eyes were on Britain. Pioneering audacious and brash, sixties style belonged to London. Youth oriented and youth driven, the boutiques of London set the tone and the world watched and followed. Nowhere was the focus more intense than Carnaby Street. Originally catering to the mods of the day, the merc name reflected the razor sharp cut, attention to details and immaculate finish that was the signature mod look. For those in the know in search of hip, happening threads, merc was the ultimate destination.
Whilst most of its original counterparts exist only in nostalgic memories, merc remains a thriving icon of London’s fashion history. Still owned and operated by its original founder, merc has been able to continue its legacy, one in which you would find anyone from The Small faces, The Jamm and NO Doubt to present celebrity fans, Green Day, The Ordinary Boys, Graham Coxon and the Kaiser Chiefs counted amongst its loyal customers.
Our operations have expanded to include a successful wholesale business in over 25 different countries however, merc’s sole retail store remains on Carnaby Street. On any given Saturday you can see 3 generations of the same family shopping together. The older ones come to be reminded of their carefree youth and the younger ones come to create their own memories. A brief tour of the shop gives visitors a chance to view merc history live. On the walls are signed Lps from some of our favourite clients, books from the 60s - 2006 fills up the shelves. But the most important experience you will have will not be seen, but will be felt the minute you pass through those glass doors. It is the great pride and energy of the merc family throughout the years; the faces may have changed but not the spirit.
merc’s designs have their roots in the best of the swinging sixties and the soul of the seventies. Proof that style never fades, from suits to boots, the look is still sleek, sharp and stylish; yet constantly reinterpreted to provide a contemporary, current take that is vitally, unmistakably merc. 39 years later and still cool as xxx!!!
